Worried sick

Fear among parents over the dangers transformation health services of drinking culture (that could lead to lethal drinking games) at the universities is growing.

But it’s not just when their daughters or sons are out and about during the school term parents worry about the amount of alcohol consumed. Summer, winter and the Easter and Christmas holidays are also a time of worry as Liz*, a mom of 3 daughters that are in university – says: “I suppose I assumed that once my girls were older and going off to university, I would be able to see them during the holiday season. I was thinking that the year would break into sections but they’d still be spending a lot of time at home. But it’s not worked out this way.

“I seldom see my girls,” Liz continues, “On one hand, I believe it’s a good indication. They must be very happy when they aren’t able to get away during the holiday season throughout school. However, on the other hand, I often find myself worried about the social aspect. The level of alcohol consumption for young women across America today is awe-inspiring as compared to my age. I’m sure many other parents who are worried across the country are feeling the similar.”

What’s the reward in this?

I’ve put in the effort, so I’m entitled to an alcoholic drink

“What is this nonsense. You’ve done your best and all about wellness “deserve” the right to an an alcohol beverage. Many teetotalers are hard-working,” says Stephen* the addiction counsellor. “What do they have to show for it? A glass of half-full water?”

“People who reward themselves with alcohol for ‘earned it’ – could be dangerous. It’s a way to develop an habit. The quantity of alcohol consumed increases with time, and people don’t reward themselves with just one drink or even a few drinks, but many.

“I have seen clients come to me seeking help for alcohol abuse who, just one or two years prior they were drinking heavily. Most of the time, it’s single parents. They’re struggling on their own with the responsibility of looking after their children and also juggling an occupation, or perhaps taking care for a portion of each week to care for their older parent, as well as dealing with the other things that life throws at them during the daytime and on weekends.

“At at the conclusion of every day, after they’ve laid the kids down. They have found a half hour to themselves. curling their feet on the couch in front of the TV and opening the bottle of wine is irresistible. They’re likely to not leave the wine at one glass but may drink up to half of the bottle. When you consider that this is a large amount of alcohol. you can consume as a reward over the course of a year.”
